How do I know that families will use the cash for basic or urgent needs?

Low-income households don’t lack character; they lack sufficient cash to make ends meet.  Current research shows us that most low-income working households are looking for a path out of poverty.  Households that receive unrestricted direct cash payments spend them responsibility.  They use it to improve their lives, e.g. buy food and medicine, pay rent, etc. and create economic stability for their family.

How do you decide “how much?” and “how long?”

Direct Giving Lab places equal emphasis on social impact and evidence collection.  With each cohort we evaluate outcomes using both qualitative and quantitative feedback, and the results inform our approach for the next cohort.  To date we have provided $100/month and $150/month; families have participated for 12 months or 24 months.  We may never have the perfect answer, but we are committed to continuous study and adjusting as the evidence indicates.

Can a household apply directly to DGL or do they have to be referred?

Direct Giving Lab partners with other nonprofit organizations and school districts for household referrals.  This approach eliminates the need for DGL to verify income, and minimizes the application process for program families.  The result: increase social outcomes at a lower cost.

Why DGL when the federal government is sending $1,200 checks?

Tax filers who did not have direct deposit established previously with the IRS will receive a check, mailed to the address on record with their 2018 tax return.  If a  family has moved in the last 2 years, their check will be delayed 2-3 months.  DGL’s direct cash payments are a direct-deposit, same day every month, guaranteed.

Do DGL families receive other federal assistance, e.g. food stamps?

Most DGL families are “working poor.”  They earn too much hourly-wage income to qualify for assistance programs, but not enough to meet their basic needs on a monthly basis.

What about unemployment insurance?

Some of the DGL families will qualify; however, the system is overburdened with a record number of Americans filing for unemployment: over 10 million in March; 6.6 million in the first week of April.  Unemployment benefits could take months to arrive.  DGL families need cash now to buy groceries and pay their rent.
